SVHS Public Gathering, Thursday, May 15th, 2025

The public is invited to Star Valley Historical Society gathering Thursday 15 May 2025 @ the Salt River Senior Center, in Afton, stating 7 PM.

On July 25, 1903, Lot 2 Block 30 Afton, Wyoming the Davis - Merrill gun fight took place. This altercation started inside the Star Valley Hotel which was owned by John Lemmon & Eliza Merrill who had purchased the business, Feb 1902, from William & John Reeves, the original builders. This tragedy has weighed heavy on the lives of families involved and the community where it took place.

IRA DAVIS was just 5 years of age living at Shell, WY with his mother Pearl Putnam Davis and 5 siblings when word came of the death of his father who had traveled to Afton, July 1903.

Thompson Davis, son of Ira & Daisy Davis, with the help of other family members, will share Ira’s life story as he traced the footprints of his father WILLIAM HENRY DAVIS.
