2024 Events Schedule

The SVHS Executive Committee has once again planned a great year of sharing history with you!

Our mission is to collect and preserve all possible data, material and records related to history of Star Valley and North Lincoln County and to share and promote the study of all related information. Our winter gathering are held at the Salt River Senior Center in Afton at 7:00 PM on the third Thursday of each month. We so appreciate the use of this facility to give our presentations.

January 18, 2024 - Kdell Bagley will discuss "Old Humor doesn't grow old--Stories from the 1st 4 generations of Fairview-ites". One of his featured ancestors is Lon Kennington.

February 15, 2024 - We will hear about some String Towns in the Valley. Vanette Dana Jensen and Gayle Hebdon Hyde will tell us about Muddy String and Ron Anderson has some stories told to him about Nield String in the early days. Bring your memories to share as well.

March 21, 2024 - Karen Fluckiger and Ron Anderson will highlight some of the WPA interviews and life stories that are available now on the state archives. You need to be here to hear all the family stories that you thought were secrets!!

April 18, 2024 - Lee Schwab will discuss with the group the research that he had done regarding the Star on the hill east of Afton to mark the home of Star Valley High School. Did you know there has been more than one Star? The white washed Star that the town of Afton is now working to light up again has been in place for 100 years, having been placed by the graduating Class of 1924. Search your family histories to find what stories you can share with the group about the icon that increases our pride in local accomplishments by our young people through the years.

May 18th, 2024 (Saturday) - Dee Hinck will be outside at the Barn Museum with the forge lit up where we can do "hands-on" blacksmithing.

July 2024 - Rock Church Play TBA. This is historically our biggest fundraiser since all proceeds go directly to the SV Historical Society to help maintain our beautiful, historic Rock Church, which is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Our plays are historically correct and a great way to showcase our local talent!

August 2024 and all summer - Our museums are open on weekends and by appointment any time for family reunions or viewing by groups. We have our DUP Museum, the Lander Trail Center and the Barn Museum and the CallAir Museum in Afton as well as the Baker Cabin in Etna. We have a need for more folks to step up and be docents and help share our history. It is really fun to visit with the folks that stop by to learn more about our area of their people who used to live here.

September 2024 - We will have our annual Antique Tractor Show. It keeps getting bigger and better. It is a great celebration of the agricultural background of our Valley and a great place to visit with friends and neighbors.

November is our annual Award Banquet where we recognize the many people who serve and help in so many ways with our Society.

Star Valley Historical Society operates solely from fundraising, like the play, sales of calendars and books, from the donations from generous businesses and individuals, and dues paid by members. We are a 503 C organization, so donations are tax deductible and are gratefully accepted. We are still making improvements to the Barn Museum and increasing our displays, as well as ongoing maintenance of our building is never ending. To be a member of the Society is simple $20 per individual paid at any of our gatherings, or State Membership is $50 per individual or couple residing at the same address. We have a Facebook page to stay in touch as well as our new website, StarValleyHistoricalSociety.org that are available for public use and are great resources for historical information.
