Synopsis
Built in 1941 by Ray & Joseph Merritt, in/of Thayne - Dean Merritt Owner. From the October 2004 SVHS Calendar LaMont Merritt Barn (Afton) "Built about 1940 for a dairy barn and also used for storing hay in the loft. Built by Ray Merritt & his boys, D'Orr and LaMont. Has concrete floor and frame sides with rustic (overlap) lumber. Gravel for concrete taken from nearby creek. Concrete was mixed by hand in a barrel type mixer. Logs were hauled from nearby forest & sawed at Gardner's sawmill. Metal for roof was purchased locally. Current use is for storing baled hay in loft and bottom is used to store household items. Hay is fed to horses used in our hunting camp and cable & Pulleys are used to elevate hunting tents for drying and storing."
